District Administrator
Dr. Jörn Klimant

Klimant LandratDr. Jörn Klimant was born on 23rd September 1958 in Kiel, the capital of Schleswig-Holstein. He is married to Annette Klimant, a biologist. The couple live with their two sons, Peer and Tjark, in Ostrohe near the Dithmarschen district town of Heide.

After leaving the Humboldt School in Kiel with A level equivalents in 1977, Dr. Jörn Klimant joined the Dresdner Bank as trainee. From 1979 he then studied law at the Christian-Albrecht University in Kiel. In 1989, on passing his second state examination, he entered the services of the Landesbank Schleswig-Holstein. Among other things he was very much involved in promoting the Schleswig-Holstein Investment Bank. During this period he was awarded his doctorate on the subject of state supervision of local authorities.

In 1990 Dr. Klimant moved to the Ministry for Internal Affairs for the state of Schleswig-Holstein; after which he worked for the regional parliament and in local government for the district of Plön.

In 1994 he was promoted to head of the ministerial office at the department of health and social security and personal aide to the minister for health and social affairs in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. Dr. Jörn Klimant, independent, was elected by the Dithmarschen district council as district administrator for six years. His first period of office began on 1st June 1996. His declared aim was to gather together the political power in the district of Dithmarschen to meet the particular challenges encountered by a rural district. On 10th February 2002 Dr. Jörn Klimant was directly elected for a further period of office.

Youth unemployment represents a special challenge for the district administrator. On the one hand Dr. Klimant wants to exploit the existing economic potential resulting from proximity to the greater Hamburg area; on the other hand we wants to use the large and varied scope for higher and further education to good effect.

Dr. Jörn Klimant, district administrator: “The West Coast University in the district town of Heide, as the newest university in Germany, was jointly created by local politics, business and administration and reflects the ability of the people in this region to make effective projects happen.”

The university, according to the district administrator, offers a great deal of scope for numerous networking opportunities with local businesses as well as prospects for CAT, the centre promoting the setting up of new businesses for the district of Dithmarschen in Meldorf.

Dr. Klimat is also committed to the development of tourism as one of the main pillars of the economy in the district of Dithmarschen. The tourism initiative initiated by him has brought together the various players that are active in this industry. It provides the stimulus for new perspectives.

“It is extremely important for our region that we develop the existing transport links. This includes as our first priority connecting Dithmarschen to the national and international trunk road network by building a new Elbe crossing near Glückstadt.”

Dr. Jörn Klimant, district administrator: “Dithmarschen is simply different – an attractive region offering a high quality of life, a landscape full of character. People are very straightforward here, they consider their actions carefully and they are determined. Dithmarschen is a region that is worth every effort.”
